Lillian first launched her business in the 1980s selling crafts and patchwork quilts. Showing her first line at New York’s annual Bed and Bath Industry Show, her designs turned the heads of Imperial Wallcoverings, who hired Lillian to design a wallpaper line.
Lillian then moved to New York to build a highly successful home textiles and wall coverings business. Lillian’s sons, Dan and John, were so inspired by their mother’s abilities that they pursued the idea of starting a home furnishings store. Together, they opened their first storefront in Westport, Connecticut.
Under the retail leadership of Dan and John, Lillian has developed a global reputation as a trend-setting resource for eclectic furniture, rugs, antiques and accessories. The family take real pride in creating distinctive furnishings and sourcing one-of-a-kind pieces from all over the world.
In 2003, the family opened their 100,000 square foot flagship design center in Norwalk, that features hundreds of brands, as well as The Lillian August Signature Collection. Five years later, Lillian introduced a new collection for Hickory White. These first debuted in her Connecticut stores at the end of that year and are now available from select dealers, including ourselves.

Lillian’s home furnishing business continues to grow not only though her eye for design, but also thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of her sons. Together they continue to develop the brand by offering an unprecedented selection of quality products from around the world.
