Sika Design Furniture
We are pleased to announce we will now be offering the divine Sika Design furniture on the Brass&Burl website – Scandinavia’s oldest producer of rattan and wicker furniture.
The story of the company began in 1942, when company founder Ankjær Andreasen produced their first batch of baskets, lamps, flower tables and other smaller interior items made of rush and willow.
The name originates from the Sika deer, which is light and elegant. The company was first established in Horsens, Denmark, where during the war, there was growing unemployment and shortage of materials. The production was based on free raw materials, such as straw from the fields after harvest, and reeds gathered from the marshes.
In the 1950s, Ankjær expanded his production to include a series of Sika Design furniture pieces made from ‘rattan’ – a species of old world climbing palm. With the characteristics of its flexible woody stem, rattan is a liana rather than a true wood…
Perfect for making beautiful furniture.
The rattan was originally imported from the Far East, and Ankjær visited there to purchase for his wicker makers in Denmark. During a trip in 1972, Ankjær was so impressed by the skilled wicker makers that he decided to open a furniture factory in Malaysia.
In recent years, rattan has experienced a real revival. This growth is also playing an integral part in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Some interesting facts about Rattan:
- It regenerates in the span of 5 to 7 years.
- Rattan contributes to preserve the rainforest, as the plant grows like vines on the trees.
- Rattan absorbs CO2 and generate clear air, producing up to 35 % more oxygen than a tree.
- Opposite bamboo, rattan is not hollow, but solid. It is strong, bendable and very durable. It is perfect for furniture production.
- Rattan is nearly impossible to wear out and lasts for many generations.
- 80% of the world’s rattan resources grow in Indonesia near Sika-Design’s factories.
- Rattan is environmentally friendly and only needs to be steamed for 15 minutes before it can be formed.
The Sika Design style is all about understated luxury and comfort. Using the best materials and craftsmanship, Sika Design guarantee the best levels of quality and sustainability. Each and every piece handled with care, professionalism and passion.
