Chinoiserie is the European interpretation and imitation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, especially in the decorative arts, garden design, architecture, literature, theatre and music. The word derives from ‘chinois’, which is French for ‘Chinese’, and the name originated at the beginning of the 17th Century in Europe. The style became highly popular among the aristocracy, and it was rare to find a house of nobility without a Chinese-influenced room.
At a time in history when continental travel was rare, Europeans knew very little about Asian cultures. Inspired by this inherent mysticism, many artists incorporated Eastern cultures into their designs. In Europe, the earliest appearance of a Chinoiserie interior design scheme was in The Grand Trianon’s ‘Trianon de porcelaine’, built for Louis XIV at Versailles in 1670. A surge of interest in this type of decorative art quickly spread through Europe.
Designer Thomas Jayne said:
So many styles, from Chippendale to Danish modern, owe a debt to Asia. The materials may change over the years, but the style continues to have appeal centuries later.
Today, Chinoiserie interior design is still a highly desirable aesthetic, with its playful flourishes contributing to a charming decorative flavor. We stock a wide range of Chinoiserie designs from the likes of Chelsea House and Wildwood to name just two.
